Searching With Google, Interesting & Unexpected Finds!

I was searching for how to contact someone and as usual Googled the someone, as you do.

Well, I found the person’s site but along the way, found another site simply because on this site there was a review about the someone I was looking for newsmine(got that? still with me?).  Actually there were several reviews about different products etc.

One of these caught my eye becuase it was about Butterfly Marketing and it’s launch.  As BFM had just finished it’s launch I assumed this article and review about the launch was written within the last couple of days.

How wrong I was, it was written back in January 2006, it is an interesting read, even those promoting it back then, were promoting it again recently.

This is even more interesting, how BFM came to be what is is today, I guess you could call this ‘read’ the “birth of BFM” way back in ?

Then there was this post which was written back in August 2006 and could have easily been written today.

It’s nice to know that although we often feel that things change on the Internet too often and too quickly, there are some things that never change, so it seems, marketing being one of them.

Maybe a good lesson to be learnt, never give up on any of your projects, keep adapting, keep renewing, keep on keeping on and surely things will come your way, one day!

I certainly hope so, catch you  again soon, take care

Cheers

Careful With Your Google Account When Setting Up A Gmail Account!

newsmineWell, I just had a time of it.  I set up a gmail account for a client at least I thought I did.

Then I noticed, everytime I was in ‘my’ google accounts, anywhere, there was the client’s gmail sitting at the top of the screen.  Okay! what is going on here?

I originally set up my Google account with an email that was not a gmail account and I’d recently changed that to another email that wasn’t a gmail account.

I started looking and there was my client’s gmail account as my primary email and so it was the username for my account with Google. I was not sure how this happened.

Google help files can be very good at times but this was not one of those times.

I followed the instructions Google had, to change this to my original account and couldn’t.  I couldn’t add a new email and password as they said in the instructions, I didn’t have that option.  Apparently you only get that option when you have a non-gmail account as your username.

What I had to do was remove the gmail account.  I did this by going to my Google account and next to Products there is an Edit option, click on that and there is an option to remove Gmail account permanently.  When you take that option you will be asked for a new email address, submit your old one and all should be well.  If it won’t accept the old email address then get another one, not gmail, try one connected to your domain name, anything except gmail.

Long storey short, don’t add a gmail account to your Google Account if you have a non gmail email address as your username.

So be very careful when you are setting up a gmail address that you are in the Gmail section and not the Google Accounts section.  I couldn’t find anywhere that Google says if you already have a Google account with a username being a non gmail email and add a gmail to your Google account that it will take over from your non gmail username.

Google did come to the rescue, in a roundabout sort of way, I finished up Googling my problem and thankfully other people had done the same thing.

In the Google Accounts Help section, I know I left behind a lot of ‘No’ radio buttons ticked as the answers were not helpful.  I dare say it wouldn’t have been so much of a problem if it had been a gmail account for myself not a client’s.  I’ll be much more careful in the future.

Take care

Cheers

To WWW or Not That Is Google’s Question?

The Plugin That Lets You Have Your Own Way With Google..

If, like I have a couple of times, you have forgotten to check the URL of your WordPress site when you first set it up, click on Settings, the first screen that comes up will have the WordPress Address URL and the Blog Address URL.

For setting up as better Search Engine fodder they should both be:-
http://www. then the domain name. If your site addresses are just the http:// then you are in need of this plugin.  It is called Enforce WWW Preference.  You can find it here:- Enforce WWW Preferences

Once again, if you have upgraded to the 2.7.1 version of WordPress then all

Smashy download

Smashy download

you need to do is, download the zip file, go to Add New in the Plugins section of your Dashboard menu, browse to where you saved the zip file, click on the Upload button, when the next screen comes up, click on the Activate plugin and you’re nearly done.

One last step, you need to go to Google Webmaster Tools, your Google account gets you in (don’t have a Google account?, sign up for one it’s free).

You need to verify your site by adding a piece of code that is supplied..  This piece of code goes into the header.php file in the Editor Section of Appearance on your site.  Look for these tags  </head>  <body> and paste the code before the </head> tag, click update/save.

Now go back to Google Webmaster Tools and hit the Verify button and all should be well, your site should be verified.

Now in the Webmaster Tools, click on Settings in the side menu and you will see the preferred domain feature options for whichever way you want your URL to be indexed, the www or the non www.

This plugin will help preserve your permalinks by enforcing your no-www or yes-www preference (http://example.com/ vs. http://www.example.com/) and will strip off index.php from the ends of URIs.

Google Webmaster Tools is not a bad place to visit, they have lots of good ‘stuff’ there to help with your sites, have a wander while you’re there doing this.

There you go, some talented person has coded this for you and me, to help us keep the search engines happy and coming back to visit our sites.

If you find the plugin useful, then why not let the person who built it know.  If you aren’t comfortable with the Paypal button, Mark has a great wish list with Amazon. Just thought I would mention that as the wish list is a good idea. Go push his buttons, you’ll find them at the bottom of the plugin link here

WordPress Google Analytics Plugin

I’ve added a new WordPress plugin to my Stash you can see this new one and all the others  here

This one is

Google Analytics Plugin

I’ve only just installed it so can’t say yet how it is.  The person who recommended it to me, was using Google Analytics by adding the code to the WordPress theme footer like I had been doing too. They changed themes and later noticed there were no stats coming through to GA.  Let it go for a few days and still nothing.

Did a few checks and you guessed it, no code for Google Analytics.  Lesson, change themes, add codes.

So having done that a few times myself, changing themes and not added the codes, I was pleased to be pointed in the direction of this plugin.

Now I’ve told you too, so there will be no excuse if you do the same thing and wonder later where your stats have gone……they will be out in cyberstats land wandering around looking very out of place.

So now you know

Catch you later
