A Lil’Bit About WordPress You May Not Know

I had payed and signed up for a membership, registered and confirmed my subscription and waited for the next step.

Nothing…..no email telling me how to access, checked the trash folder…..nothing.

Now this membership was set up with WordPress, which is fine, I’ve joined many membership sites set up with WordPress.  Actually I’m getting ready to set up one myself. And….I’m very thankful that this happened as you will see.

Anyway, I was about to contact the person who owned the site when I needed to check a few of the folders that I have emails directed to and there it was…Guess who sent it?    WordPress….that’s who it was from and I have a folder where anything with WordPress in the ‘From’ goes directly to that particular folder(the folder is called something else, not WordPress but that’s my filing system).wordpressiconred

I have never had a site where ‘anyone can register’ so had never come across this before.

Now I was adding the plugin Web Invoices to one of my sites to make sending accounts to clients easier.  This is a great plugin, actually there are two of them, I’ll tell you my pick later.

With this plugin, you need to enter your clients, they don’t register, that’s how my site is set.  They need a username and password to access their past invoices and the WordPress will send that to them automatically the same as if they were registering as a new user.

So that was the email that would go out to clients and they would have no idea why they were getting an email from WordPress and who the heck is WordPress anyway? (these clients don’t do much stuff on the Internet)

So Google, being such a good friend of mine, helped me to find a plugin for WordPress that would solve this problem.

There are a couple, actually three that I considered.  The one I chose has templates of the emails which can be easily changed to suit and now the clients will know just who is sending them an email.

If you install it through your dashboard, which is very easy, that should be the latest version, (I had to upgrade mine as soon as it was activated) so check just in case, because the latest version has some really good ‘Settings’ options.  You can reword the email that goes to the client/user and even send a test so that you are sure it is right.

This is the plugins site.

And it works like a treat!!

My 2009 Wish List, Wish #1

I ask my family for their wish lists at Christmas time, Birthdays, Anniversaries and for the year ahead.  Sometimes i can make a wish for the year ahead happen, sometimes not.

HBW Everybody....:O)))I’m starting my online wish list for 2009, today is the first on that list.

This wish relates to the time over Christmas when my computer was turned off.

When I got around to checking on my email inbox, there were nearly 3000 emails waiting for me and my first wish is the result. :-)

2009 Wish #1

There is one thing I would like to see happen in 2009 and that is…..

When you are on someone’s list and you take up an offer from them that you need to sign up for, you then go on that particular list.  You are now on two of their lists.  If another offer comes along that interests you, you sign up and now you are on a third list and so it goes on.

I have not taken up offers simply because I just don’t want to go on another of that person’s lists and get yet another email.

Three lists equals three emails, etc. etc. etc………..

Hey! with all the technology today, would it be possible when an offer is going out to all their lists, that they have a mega list, so their subscribers only get the ONE email not three!!!  And……..

The testing of headlines/subject lines…………

There are times when they send two or three different subject lines, same email content and this can happen every day with different messges each day……..big turnoff, good reason to hit the link at the bottom of the message.

The ‘ooops’ emails too get a trifle boring, I know everyone makes mistakes and no one is perfect but… when you can almost predict 100% who will send you the ‘ooops’ emails and when, well, come on fellas!

With Twitter have such an impact during the latter part of 2008, in 2009 there could be less emailing.

Maybe there could be a return of the ‘real’ newsletter, not daily maybe bi-weekly, weekly, fortnightly.

At the moment, when you sign up for a newsletter, with a few exceptions, it is just an excuse to send you offers to buy someone’s stuff or promote a JV, like so many others are doing.

I could go on but I won’t, that’s enough for my #1 wish for 2009.

The short of it….

When you are emailing to all your lists, get yourself set up with a Mega List, will save you time too :-)

Instead of doing the Subject line test with several emails, run a poll, they are very popular at the moment, get your subs to vote, rate etc.  :-)

Don’t do the ‘ooops’ emails unless they are really an ‘ooops’ :-)

Give me a real newsletter :-)   (if you don’t know what they are, go find out) :-)

Take advantage of Twitter  :-)

Well that’s #1, I let you know #2 in a couple of days.

Till then, take care

Cheers to you from me

Carmel
