Who is in charge of the dictionary?
I’ve just watched a couple of media releases – the report on the Australian Olympic Swim Team at the 2012 Olympics and the tanking, oops!! that word is not being used, of the Melbourne AFL football club, not sure what they are calling it but can’t call it tanking.
The word toxic was used in regard to the swim team and as I said, tanking for the AFL football team.

Couldn’t find tanking in the dictionary.
Tanking
The word tanking, in terms of sport, would be used to describe a bad performance
Tanking is the act of giving up a match or “throwing it away”, losing intentionally or not competing.
Tank came from Tennis jargon, by way of boxing jargon. Originally, it meant to lose on purpose to gain an advantage. You could tank a set to get a rest or tank a boxing match so your backers could make money gambling against you.

With all the happenings lately with regard to sport and the ‘not on the up and up’ for match results, sportspersons, coaching, support staff and the clubs saying how it is not them they are talking about, they didn’t do any of that bad stuff, what is one to make of it all???
As for swimming, the head coach didn’t seem to know what was going on. Now I’m sure he wasn’t there for the love of it, he would have been paid and I dare say paid well. But he didn’t seem to do his job or else most of the problems wouldn’t have happened. He obviously wasn’t the only one on the management side of things who wasn’t doing the job they were sent over there to do. But the coach is the big boss, the top position when the team is competing, he/she should know what is happening with the team and the team members.
So toxic really is not the right word. How about variations of manage or lead – not managed, no manager, not lead, no leader. I’m sure you can think of your own.
Now for the AFL and the word tanking.
One of the allegations with the football codes has been match fixing. In the context of tanking, what is the difference, couldn’t it be called match fixing? No matter why the game/s were thrown there was a required result for the actions that were taken and that was for the team not to win!!!
Match fixing doesn’t only mean to win dollars on the result of the game. No, it means the desired outcome of the game to advantage or disadvantage as arranged by the party doing the orchestrating.
So who is in charge of the dictionary?
It seems if you call something by another name it becomes something else….don’t think so!!!

Two Weeks Into A New Year
Two Weeks Into A New Year and most probably those who made new year resolutions on new year’s eve have either forgotten about them, broken them or decided that that wasn’t really what they wanted to do anyway and it was the champers planning.
For a lot of years now I haven’t made a new year resolution, couldn’t see the point but this year I working a little differently.
You see I have made a ‘to do’ list instead of resolutions.
My first is to go through my emails and unsubscribe from lists that I am not getting anything out of or the list owner is just pimping every product that comes out.
I have been surprised at some of the things I have found going through these emails, must admit, many of them had never been opened. Actually I made up my mind to do this at the beginning of June.
What I did was have all my emails forwarded to one email address and set up Mozilla Thunderbird to receive them. In case you haven’t heard of Thunderbird it is just like Outlook Express that used to come with Microsoft Explorer.
So it has been an interesting exercise, will post in a couple of days my results. The unsubscribing has started also the deleting.
It is going to be a busy year as I have just about finished setting up a new business for offline local businesses — to help them get an internet presence and do something I always wished i had someone do for me and that is to provide them with what is needed to set up a client database and look after it for them. That will mean they will be able to take care of their business and run it.
Another area we will be covering is making sure the local business has a good reputation and letting everyone know about it. Today with so many people involved with social media, a great reputation is so important.
We are also setting up local directories for various types of businesses. so far we have just about finished ones for local tradesmen and local restaurants. Next will be local florists.
Another on my ‘to do’ list is getting the word out about QR (Quick Response) codes. You may have seen what looks like black and white puzzles included in advertising. They are not puzzles, they are 2D bar codes which can contain a wealth of information, discount coupons, a website, an email response and lots of other neat things.
Well we turn that black and white code into a stunning design using the company/business colours and logos etc.
